Topic of the Month

We are pleased to announce recent advancements in the care of children at Evans Medical Group. This involves new vaccines to help prevent serious diseases and a new way to screen for common eye disorders.

For over a year we have been offering the latest version of the meningitis vaccine (Menactra) which now protects people for life against meningococcal disease. Meningitis is a very dangerous disease that can start with flu-like symptoms and progress rapidly (24-48 hours), resulting in permanent brain damage, hearing loss, limb amputation, and death. College freshmen and military recruits, especially those living in dormitories or barracks, are at the greatest risk of infection. We are offering this vaccine to all patients 11 years and older.

In the next few months we will be offering babies the Rotateq oral vaccine to help prevent Rotaviral disease. Rotavirus is an intestinal virus that causes severe vomiting, diarrhea and dehydration in infants and young children and is one of the leading causes of hospitalization in those age groups. Nearly all children suffer from this virus by age 5. The vaccine has been shown to be very effective in protecting children against this disease.

The final addition will be a vision screening device called Sure Sight. This will be used to help detect eye problems in children at their yearly check ups starting at age 1. Detecting conditions such as amblyopia early can prevent blindness later in life.

Blending technology with a compassionate human touch is important to us, and we look forward to serving your health care needs in the promising future.
